Zengo Restaurant, Bar and Lounge: Fine Latin-Asian Flavors at the Santa Monica Place
by Cindy Ambuehl on July 19, 2011Whether you are a foodie looking for a new restaurant or you are just looking for a place to get drinks after work, you must try Zengo.
Zengo recently opened at 395 Santa Monica Place in the new mall at the promenade. The chef-owner Richard Sandoval has over fifteen restaurants and he was named one of the “Best Chefs of 2003″ by New York Magazine. The meals have Latin-Asian flavors and are designed for sharing. I particularly like this idea because you get to try more things on the menu.
Here are some other things to know about Zengo:
- The beverage menu has Latin wines, Japanese sake, and a collection of superb tequilas.
- Happy hour is everyday from 4-7pm in the bar/lounge.
- Zengo is available for private parties in the beautiful dining room designed by internationally acclaimed AvroKo.
I went to Zengo on a Thursday night and as I walked in my mood was completely changed by the setting. We sat down outside where they had couch style seating and a fireplace with heaters everywhere so it was not chilly. From where we sat there was sweeping views of the Third Street Promenade, which was a beautiful site with all of the city night lights.
Our waiter was very sweet although it took him a while to come back to us because they were busy. We ordered a bunch of food to try and share including the vegetariano roll, yucca fries, grilled beef short ribs, chicken tandori, and house made meatballs. The meals were small portions but fantastic. My personal favorite was the grilled beef short ribs which has a manchego cheese potato puree drizzled on top that was absolutely delicious. For dessert I got the chocolate banana cake that was just as wonderful as it sounds. Zengo is definitely becoming one of my favorite summer spots and I have gone twice since my first visit!
Have you tried Zengo or any other scrumptious restaurants in the area? Please share your experiences and leave your comments below.

I was invited to dine recently at Zengo and I loved it. We were seated outside and were able to enjoy the sunset. Everything that we ate was delicious and the service was impeccable. I was pleasantly surprised because I did not expect such a great dining experience in a mall. Thanks for writing this post.
Zengo was great- been there once and we shared a bunch of plates like you suggest. I remember loving the dessert!
